What is in-hospital newborn photography? A plain-language guide for parents
Hospital newborn photos are the portraits taken in your room during your maternity stay — before the swelling settles, before the umbilical clamp comes off, before you go home. Here's what actually happens, what it costs, and how to decide whether it's for you.
In-hospital newborn photography, defined
In-hospital newborn photography (sometimes called "Fresh 48" or bedside newborn photography) is a short professional portrait session photographed in the family's hospital room, usually on day one or two after birth. A photographer who is credentialed with the hospital visits the maternity floor, knocks, and offers each family a session. The photos are edited the same day and delivered through a private online gallery.
It is different from a studio newborn shoot, which normally happens at 5–14 days old with posed, sleepy setups. Both are lovely; they simply capture different things. Hospital newborn photos are documentary and intimate: the bassinet, the hospital bracelet, the first family cuddle, the way a brand-new baby curls.
Why the first 48 hours photograph like nothing else
Newborns change quickly. In the first two days you'll see flaky skin, puffy eyes, a slightly cone-shaped head, a full head of dark hair that may lighten later, and the tight fetal curl that relaxes within a week. Milk spots, the umbilical stump, that tiny hospital hat — none of it lasts. Parents tell us these details are exactly what they most want to remember and least often have photos of, because everyone is exhausted and phones are full of blurry snapshots.
What happens at a bedside session
- The knock. During daily rounds our photographer knocks and asks if you'd like photos. If it's a bad moment we come back, and "not today" is always fine.
- Fifteen minutes. We use the natural window light in your room. Baby stays in your arms or in the bassinet; we may use a soft neutral wrap or your own blanket. Parents, partners and siblings are welcome in the frame.
- Same-day preview. Before you're discharged we show you the edited photos on a tablet and leave a printed price card. There is no decision to make in the room.
- Your gallery at home. A private access code goes home with you. Orders stay open for 14 days; share the code with grandparents so they can look and order too.
What hospital newborn photos cost
With First Light the session is free. If you love the photos, three packages are published and never change in the room:

Individual prints and digitals are available à la carte from $25. Nothing is added at checkout. Nationally, hospital baby pictures typically run anywhere from about $30 to $400 depending on the company and package; we chose three simple tiers so the decision is easy.
Is it safe for the baby?
Yes, when it's done properly. Baby stays with you — in your arms or in the bassinet — and never leaves the room. We don't use the elaborate posed setups you see in studio photography; a newborn's first days call for gentleness, not props. Our photographers are background-checked, immunized, trained in safe newborn handling and infection control, and follow every hospital's infant-security policy to the letter.
NICU families
If your baby is in the NICU, a bedside session isn't always possible on the unit. NICU families can request a session at discharge — give us 48 hours' notice through the registration form or by email and we'll coordinate with your care team so the session fits around them.
Privacy: who sees my baby's photos?
Only you and the people you give your gallery code to. Galleries are private and code-protected. We never use a family's photos in marketing — including this website — without written consent that you can withdraw at any time. Your images belong to you.

Many families do both. If you're choosing one, ask yourself which version of these days you'd rather hold in twenty years: the styled portrait, or the bracelet, the bassinet and the first cuddle. There's no wrong answer.

- Your hospital room already has everything we need.
- If you like, bring one soft blanket or a small keepsake — a knit hat, a stuffed animal.
- Parents in the frame: solid, neutral tops photograph best.
- Tell your nurse you'd like photos, or register in advance so we know to knock.
